It has been a long two weeks and exposed my internet addiction to the light of day. I would like to say that I have spent the past two weeks in recovery for my problem. Unfortunately, I have spent the time throwing install media around and cursing the gods of the bit.

I had all three systems crash within 2 days and could not get anything working to save my life. It was all software issues and every CD or DVD I tried to use was mutilated and FUBAR’ed. In the dark days that followed, I slipped to the bottom of the barrel of computing. I retrieved my Windows install media. I have been free of the windows curse for almost two years now, but I was desperate for news and obscure minutia.

In a moment of clarity, I went and bought seem DVD+R’s and after invoking a prayer of boot parameters, I was rewarded with Linux on my laptop. So as I unburden my soul in the warm glow of my LCD, I prepare to resurrect the server and the Mac. Unfortunately, my appeal for a new mac to ease my pain over the betrayal of the mini has gone unheeded. So I will summon all of my computing powers to return it to life.

Yes, the picture of me you have is correct. I am sequestered in a dungeon like room, hair standing on end, maniacal gleam in my eyes and my hands trembling is accurate. Trust me when I tell you this is not an attractive look for a pregnant woman. Regardless, my faith has been restored. Now where did I put the chicken blood to purify the os X DVD’s?

Lighters and Breast Milk

What I can I say. The TSA has rendered the main thrust of my argument useless. No matter, I can travel again. The TSA is going to allow lighters back on planes. You will again be able to take your disposable or zippo on your flight. No butane torch lighters however. An excellent idea and smokers worldwide rejoice. No longer are you forced to pay $5 to get a new lighter after you disembark. With the hassles of modern air travel, I would assume many non-smokers even get the urge to light up. After the rigors of the security checks and a long flight with many annoying individuals it is only natural to seek a little stress relief.

The one that effects me is the new regulations on breast milk. You will now be allowed to carry more than 3 ounces of breast milk as long as you declare it for inspection. This is definitely a step in the right direction. I do question h0w they plan on inspecting breast milk. I am unable to fathom a simple way to test breast milk. I suppose they could make you drink some, but I don’t believe to many adults would be thrilled with that concept. Still kudos to the TSA for showing some common sense.

New regulations take effect on August 4th.

What happens to all those items that are confiscated at the airport? Do they just rust away someplace? Apparently a good portion of them are auctioned off on EBay.

Since 9/11 we have expanded the list of potential weapons exponentially. We all know about the fluid restrictions, knives, scissors, etc.. I understand the reasons behind the restrictions and believe me, I don’t want to poke at that particular hornet’s nest again. I have learned my lesson on that one.

I think this an excellent solution to a growing problem. They also give away items to homeless shelter. While I’m sure that some items are valuable or have great sentimental value, most of us could care less about losing nail clippers.

Baby Names

I am only going to say this once. We are not telling what name we have chosen for the baby. I took way to much criticism over Grace Kathaleen. I am aware that she has a very Irish name. I just happen to be Irish and she is named after my mother. I will not subject myself to such torture again. It is our decision as to what to name the baby, no one else gets an opinion. We are still not sure ourselves. We have batted around some names and need to get moving on this. We are rapidly approaching a point where the decision must be made. My advice to everyone else is leave me alone when it comes to naming the baby. Everyone will know soon enough.

Tacos and Pregnancy

I can only admit to one true craving with this pregnancy, and that is Tacos and taco salad. I don’t know what they have that I need but that is all I seem to want to eat. At least it is not a truly bizarre craving. My sister-in-law used to eat m&m’s and cool ranch doritos at the same time.

The fact that our local Taco Bell closed is making procurement an issue. If they were still open I doubt I would still be losing weight. I am now forced to make my own, which is dangerous. The tremors from the brethine make frying meat a really interesting experience. That and I am going to have to buy stock in tums to treat the heartburn. With Josh it was pickles and with Grace it was lemons. Josh loves pickles and Grace love lemons. It is a logical jump to conclude that this one will love tacos.

Mine certainly was not. Mine decided it was time to give up the ghost. It did so in a grand fashion, befitting the aging monolith it was. It almost caught the house on fire and we were without blessedly cold food or drink for about a week. A bunch of wires in front started to spark and that was the end. We went and bought a new one yesterday and it has cooled our food adequately.

You don’t realize what a luxury a fridge is until you are without one. We were able to salvage some of our food in coolers with ice, but most was lost. We have now procured a new fridge and it is acting up as well. Why is it that these things happen in the hottest weather. We just spent $300 to restock the food that was lost and now the new freezer doesn’t want to freeze anything. I guess this is what I get for buying a used fridge. We just didn’t have the cash to buy a new one. I can only hope the appliance guy honors his warranty. In the meantime, all of the ice cream is melting.

Virtual PC adventures.

ndTo get ready for my next class, I had to return to the evils of windows. I am having laptop issues at the moment and have given up on dealing with it for the time being. I cannot get the damn thing do boot from a CD or DVD to save my life. In my attempt to get something running so I could install the needed source material for class, I finally got around to installing virtual PC 7 for mac. It was a remarkably painless process. I have run Virtual PC before under windows and was left with a bitter taste in my mouth.

At the moment xp is installing in the background. I am not seeing the performance lag I had come to anticipate from an emulated PC and all in all things have moved along really well. I am very pleased at the moment. I am not happy about having to return to a M$ product, but I really have no choice. After a lot of phone calls to tech support, there seems to be no solution to having windows on a machine. I really need to get it installed on the laptop; that way I can work away from home. As I get closer to delivery. I am starting to worry about what happens if I go into labor during a class.

Well, as I was writing, Windows finished installing and is actually more responsive than i had anticipated. After a year not touching a windows machine, it is strange to have one reside on my mac.
